US Navy Tribute To Veteran Goes Viral
A group of US Navy officers' tribute to a World War Two veteran has gone viral, racking up nearly five million views online.
The officers marched to the house of 98-year-old Ernest Thompson in Gardena, California. They then formed a squad on the street before singing “Anchors Aweigh”, the march song of the US Navy.
Thompson stood up and saluted his visitors, who came up to him and shook his hand.
The men were the chief selectees from the Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare Training Center.
They paid tribute to Thompson because for health reasons he had not been able to make his regular visit to the USS Iowa battleship.
USS Iowa is a sister ship to the USS Missouri that Thompson served on during World War II.
Thompson said it was “one of the best days of his life.”
Jonathan Williams, Thompson’s grandson, shared a video of the tribute and thanked the naval officers for the surprise visit.
