Military community comes together in Edinburgh to mark 95th anniversary of Scottish War Memorial

Watch: Edinburgh Castle hosts church service to honour anniversary of Scottish National War Memorial.

A church service was held to mark the 95th anniversary of the installation of the Scottish National War Memorial in Edinburgh.

Members of the Armed Forces and military community came together for a service at Edinburgh Castle to commemorate the fallen from the Great War.

The Scottish National War Memorial was built to create a focal point for people in the country to pay their respects.

Dr Claire Armstrong, chief executive of the Royal British Legion Scotland, said: "It's a tremendous building. It just has the most amazing atmosphere.

"It's a big day – it's a day to pause and reflect.

"We've had a beautiful poignant service in the Scottish National War Memorial.

"Very fitting we pause at the beginning to remember the 79th anniversary for D-Day as well.

"The decades go by but still it's important that we do pause.

"There are a lot of conversations at the moment about how long do we remember, how long do we keep certain commemorations going, but it's something that we have to continue."

The anniversary also coincided with the 79th anniversary of the D-Day Landings – where many from Scotland fought and gave their lives.
