Echoes of History: Full body gas mask used to protect babies in WW2

The Echoes of History Show sees enthusiasts showing off their collections of military memorabilia.

One of those at the show, Roger Pickett, has multiple gas masks in his collection – including a mint condition gas mask that dates back to 1943.

But perhaps the most striking item in Mr Pickett's collection is the Second World War gas mask designed to keep a baby safe in a gas attack.

The infant would be placed inside the metal chamber, with the cowling fastened between the baby's legs and then the contraption would be carried by the mother as she ran away from an attack, all the time pumping air for the child.
