Fridge-carrying Royal Marine becomes two-time world record holder
Royal Marine Sam Hammond is now a two-time world record holder – after beating the record for running the London Marathon with a fridge on his back.
The 30-year-old corporal completed the 26.2-mile route around the capital with a 26kg fridge strapped to his back in four hours, 52 minutes, and 10 seconds.
He broke the record for the fastest marathon carrying a household appliance and previously broke the same record for a half marathon.
Corporal Hammond said: "Initially when I first crossed the line, I was just so happy to have finished more than anything.
"The amount of support and nice messages coming through is awesome.
"I beat the previous record by just over 57 minutes so I was really happy about that."
The Royal Marine has used the marathons and the record attempts to raise funds for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity.
He has raised more than £4,000 for the organisation, which works with veterans and their families.
He added: "For me, everything revolves around family so I'm hoping the money will go towards families who need it most.
"On the other side, it is the same when I raised money for the mountain rescue, something for the volunteers. The people who give up their time.
"If they said, 'Hey Sam, can we buy a coffee machine', I'd be 100% getting them that coffee machine."
