The military community has exceeded expectations during a unique virtual charity fundraising challenge for the BFBS Big Salute by running, walking or rowing 17,064 miles – equivalent to 39,255,732 steps.

The original target was 7,635 miles – the distance between BFBS Brunei and BFBS Canada –  but when the participants hit the target the goalposts were moved to 15,270 miles and in true military style they surpassed that by 1,794 miles.

In a truly global effort, the week-long Big Salute Mile-a-thon showcased incredible feats of determination from serving personnel, families, veterans and BFBS's civilian listeners, raising funds while increasing awareness of a military charity.

Among the energetic fundraisers were 15 children from St Christopher's School in Gibraltar who ran almost 15 miles in laps around a tennis court, while teams from the Combat Ready Training Centre in Germany ran, rowed and turbo-biked 230 miles.

In Brunei, RAO Detachment, 1st Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles showed their support for The Big Salute Mile-a-thon by running, and students, teachers and parents in Ralston School in Canada raised $160 by running 282 miles.

The event was held to raise essential funds for The BFBS Big Salute, which directly supports military charities providing vital services and meaningful impact to the Armed Forces community.

The Mile-a-thon spanned from BFBS's easternmost radio station in Brunei to the furthest west in Canada.

Participants of all ages ran, walked, cycled, swam or chose their own creative way to log their miles and help BFBS eventually surpass the original goal of 7,635 miles with daily mileage tracked online throughout the week.
