British military GP trainees near the end of training in Cyprus

Watch: Medical personnel in Cyprus are nearing the end of their training.

Medical GP trainees from across the British Armed Forces are approaching the end of their training in Cyprus, before beginning their job for real.

Unlike civilian GPs, these personnel are trained to care for and protect their patients while carrying both medical supplies and a rifle or pistol.

On duty, they will deal with a variety of potential situations, from combat injuries to occupational injuries, and humanitarian crises.

And, unlike a conventional A&E setting where five or six staff will be caring for one patient, they can often find themselves in situations where patients outnumber those who are responding.

The video above shows how the course in Cyprus fills in the gaps between the NHS training they have received and the skills required for life as a military GP, ready to deploy anywhere in the world.
