The Ministry of Defence has confirmed "major commemorations" will take place next year to mark the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings.

Veterans of the Normandy campaign will be at the heart of the official events that will take place in both the UK and France on 6 June 2024.

It is being requested that veterans who want to attend the commemorations register with the Royal British Legion.

Speaking about the upcoming anniversary, Defence Secretary Grant Shapps said: "The story of D-Day reminds us of the tragic price paid to free western Europe from tyranny.

"We will do all we can to remember those who died and thank those who served in the defence of freedom 80 years ago.

"Our Armed Forces are inspired by the legacy of the Greatest Generation and will lead the nation in commemorating their bravery next year."

For the first time, the commemorations will be hosted at the newly completed British Normandy Memorial at Ver-sur-Mer, Normandy.

Other official events will take place at Bayeux Cathedral and at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission's Bayeux War Cemetery in Normandy.

For those unable to make the journey over to France, the UK will have other commemorative events taking place.

Members of the public will also have the opportunity to be included in the commemorations via a campaign of events, tributes and broadcasts to ensure the whole country can pay respects to the fallen of D-Day.

More information is due to be released next year.
