Watch: The impressive footage shows Romanian F-16 fighter jets sign off on Nato mission

Stunning footage shows the majestic sight of Romanian F-16 fighter jets in formation as they signed off on Nato's Baltic Air Policing mission in style.

The Romanian Air Force shared the duties with Portugal until the two Allied nations handed over Nato's Quick Reaction Alert to Spain and Italy.

Portuguese and Romanian F-16 fighter jets policed the skies over Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

The F-16 Fighting Falcons helped to shield the skies as part of Baltic Air Policing, originally established to secure the skies over the Baltic countries, which do not have fighters capable of intercepting unknown air contacts.

To cover their allies, several NATO countries send jets to air bases in Lithuania and Estonia, where they are on standby for any contingency.

Air policing is a peacetime activity that takes place 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

When NATO Combined Air Operations Centres (CAOCs) detect air traffic that is not responding to hails, they can scramble jets to intercept and visually identify the aircraft.

The footage, posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Monday, shows the jets in the skies over the Baltic as they took over the mission earlier this year in May.

It was posted as the US approved the delivery of F-16 warplanes from the Netherlands and Denmark to Ukraine and agreed to participate in the F-16 training of Ukrainian pilots if "capacity is reached in Europe".

Both the Netherlands and Denmark have announced their intentions to make F-16 fighter jets from their own fleets available to Ukraine, following the US approval for the third-party transfer of US-made F-16 aircraft to Ukraine.
