847 Naval Air Squadron Finishes Training In Scotland

847 Naval Air Squadron has finished its live fire training in Scotland, where they were supporting Exercise Joint Warrior.

Guiding F-15 live bombing runs, taking terminal control of live fire from American Seahawks and providing close rotary wing air support to 29 Commando are just some of the contributions 847 Squadron has made.

"We have given a lot to the other players and we have also achieved a huge amount of our own training," Commanding Officer Major Ian Moore, said.

The training has also been an opportunity for the Squadron to qualify three pilots as Naval Gunfire Forward Observers, with 847 now able to declare a joint fires capability from an airborne platform.

"We now have people who can control artillery - both 105 and 155 - as well as precision-guided artillery.

"We also now have naval gunfire forward observers who can call for and direct naval gunfire in support of 3 Commando Brigade amphibious operations," Major Ian Moore added.

It comes after a busy few months for them after spending the first part of the year in the Arctic.

The Squadron is now due to return to their home base in Yeovilton and will prepare for NATO exercises later this year.
