Australian WW2 Veterans Take A Seat Inside A Bomber Once Again

The veterans shared stories with today's crew and were given the chance to clamber inside the Lancaster.

Due to the thick fog, a planned flypast at the ceremony the following day had to be cancelled, making it all the more special that the veterans had been able to get up close once again, to the aircraft they knew so well.

The visit brought back some strong memories.

Laurie Wood, former 460 Sqn of the Royal Australian Airforce, said:

“There was a terrific explosion and I heard the pilot call, ‘Laurie! Laurie! Quick!’.

"I dashed back to him and he’d been wounded badly in the face and he’d fallen forward. We were going into a dive so I grabbed hold of the control column and held it back to stop us from diving. Then two of the crew lifted him out of the seat and laid him on the floor beside me and I with only 10 minutes experience of being shown how to fly a Lancaster, I flew the Lancaster from the middle of the Ruhr valley back to England.”
