On Board The Merlin Helicopters Supporting This Gruelling Army Challenge

Royal Navy helicopters have been playing a central part in the Army’s annual Ten Tors challenge on Dartmoor.

More than 2,000 teenagers have taken part, trekking from 35 to 55 miles across the national park and famed military training area over two days.

Merlin helicopters from 845 Naval Air Squadron delivered supplies and provided air support to the event – ensuring that participants are kept safe.

This is the first year the squadron has supported the event with its Merlin Mk3i’s, as the role is normally fulfilled by 846.

Ahead of the event, Lieutenant Commander Alex Hampson, senior pilot, 845 Naval Air Squadron said:

“We will be here to support any medical emergencies, any injuries.”

“We’ll also be there to help the running of it, so if any staff need to get out across the moor and also monitoring the teams as they go round.”
