Carol Vorderman Visits RAF Air Cadet Camp

TV presenter Carol Vorderman has visited an RAF Air Cadet camp to inspire the youngsters to get more involved in certain studies.

The former Countdown host has been an RAF Ambassador for the cadets since 2014 and visited the camp to encourage more youngsters to take part in STEM subjects - science, technology, engineering and maths.

Speaking to Forces News, Ms Voderman, who has been made an Honorary Group Captain by the RAF, said: "To have the privilege and honour to wear the (RAF) uniform, for me, is hugely significant.

"And to do it with so many tens of thousands of young people is genuinely a big part of my life - it is a great honour.

"I work a lot with young people, I give bursaries for young children who are from my background, which is not a great comprehensive school, to get to some of the great universities that we have, so it is a huge part of my life."

More than 400 Air Cadets, aged between 14 and 20, have been taking part in the week-long camp which is designed to offer a unique insight into aerospace, aviation and engineering.

Cadet Warrant Officer Talya said: "I'm the third generation of my family to be in the Cadets.

"I love flying, I love aviation and I really love the fact that Cadets gives you so many opportunities to meet similar people and push yourself in ways you probably wouldn't in a civilian camp or organisation."

Cadet Flight Sergeant Priya also said: "The RAF Air Cadets has actually helped me pick what I want to do in my career, so it actually gives an insight into all sorts of careers from pilot, not just military but civilian as well...it's amazing."

The course aims to develop self-confidence, encourage innovation and develop a passion for aviation and STEM subjects.
