The Sovereign Base Areas (SBA) police force in Cyprus is donating food to families in need amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Officers from Akritori Division's Community Unit donated 35 boxes of food to surrounding villages last week.

Each package contained large amounts of dried food and tinned goods, including staple choices such as pasta, cereal, beans, potatoes and flour, a statement by British Forces Cyprus said.

The boxes also contained meat and fish, as well as more seasonal goods like traditional tsoureki sweet bread and some Easter treats.

Local businesses and police officers contributed to the boxes, while €700 was donated from a charity fund.

Akrotiri Division's Deputy Divisional Commander, Superintendent Constandinos Petrou, said: "We were able to identify 45 families within the SBAs that were in need of our help, so we wanted to be able to provide them with some essentials during this very challenging period.

“Our communities are extremely important to us and if we are able to help those in need, then we will of course, do what we can.”

The SBA police's Food Aid programme was first introduced during the financial crisis of 2013, however, it has now been reintroduced to help "struggling families" through the pandemic.
