Corrie McKeague: Police Begin Landfill Search

A search of a landfill site is underway as police search for missing RAF airman Corrie McKeague.

The site, at Milton near Cambridge, is part of the investigation to find the 23-year-old, who has been missing since 24 September. It's expected to take up to 10 weeks.

The area covers 1,100 square yards and is up to 26ft deep.

Detective Superintendent Katie Elliott said:

"Teams of specialist search trained police officers from both Suffolk and Norfolk will be carrying out the work to find anything that may be linked to the investigation.

"We need to find him and discover what happened to him. While the search may not provide the answers as to what happened it is something we need to do as our investigation continues.”

It comes after a man was held on suspicion of perverting the course of justice.

It was reported that he was a part-time police constable and a waste management controller at the firm, Biffa.

One of the company's lorries was seen in the area where Corrie went missing in Bury St Edmunds.

It was later searched by police after they found his mobile phone to have moved along a similar route.

The 26-year-old was questioned by police before being released on bail.

Corrie, who is based at RAF Honington, went missing after a Friday night out with friends.

He was last seen at around 03:25 on the Saturday morning.

Police have released CCTV footage of two people who were seen on foot in in the "horseshoe" area of the town, around the time of the last sighting of him.

Any information relating to Corrie's disappearance or about the potential witnesses should be passed to the incident room on 01473 782019.

Alternatively you can call 101 and ask to speak to the team.
