Factory Ramps Up Supply Of Rooms For Rebasing British Forces Germany Soldiers

A factory outside Wimborne in Dorset has marked the completion of its final 'Single Living Accommodation' unit for service personnel moving to Wiltshire in 2019.

The units are a major part of the Army Basing Programme, that will see thousands of troops and their families returning to the UK, as forces are withdrawn from bases in Germany.

Contractors working on 'Single Living Accommodation’ units
More than 2,400 'Single Living Accommodation’ units have been built for garrisons at Salisbury Plain.

The new units are a clear move away from the previous design of four-man rooms, providing privacy and space for single soldiers.

Warrant Officer Class 1 Paul Carney, Command Sergeant Major for HQ 3 (UK) Division, believes the new accommodation provides soldiers with levels of comfort they can look forward to.

"At times they'd be expected to deploy on operations and in the field where their conditions won't be as good."

Completed single-room unit is hoisted onto truck
Single-room units are 75 per cent built at the factory.

Steve Chivers, of the manufacturers Rollalong, said the accommodation modules are almost 75 per cent finished by the time they leave the factory, which allows them to be installed quickly at the site

"We can install, and waterproof, and bolt the modules down, typically, within five to 10 days."

Construction work at Bulford Camp

The Ministry of Defence says the construction programme is scheduled for completion by 2020, enabling all British Army units based in Germany to return to the UK by then.
