A British military dog assisting with security at the Olympic Games in France is facing amputation after an accident.

The black labrador named Twitter fractured her leg during a five-metre (16ft)  fall while securing Olympic sites in Paris.

The heroic detection dog will undergo the amputation surgery on Wednesday, according to UK Defence in France.

"It's a tough blow, but her incredible spirit shines through," UK Defence in France said in a post on the social media site X.

"Very thankful for the outstanding vet care she received in France. Stay strong, Twitter!" the post continued.

According to French authorities, Twitter had surgery a week ago, immediately after the fall and, at the time, it was thought Twitter would be back on the field very soon.

It is unclear what happened during the week that led to the need for an amputation.

British forces are in Paris to assist with security for the eight-week period of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

UK military dogs have been tasked with sniffing out anything suspicious, ensuring that the Games run smoothly.

While the dogs have helped secure the ground, the RAF, with its eyes on the skies, is providing equipment and personnel to help counter potential unauthorised drones.

The security operation for what is one of the world's largest sporting events involves the largest peacetime deployment of security forces in France's history â€“ with up to 75,000 police, soldiers and hired guards on patrol in Paris at any one time.
