Meet the MOD Police dogs protecting Devonport naval base

Forces News has been given special access to the Ministry of Defence (MOD) Police and its dog unit helping to protect Devonport naval base, Plymouth.

Working dogs can detect and intercept suspicious activity and criminality, but training them is a gradual process – especially if training them to become a specialist drugs or explosives dog. 

The unit in Devonport has more than 15 working dogs.

PC Claire Addems, Dog Handler at the MOD Police, told Forces News that the dogs specialising in the detection of explosives "are essential as a deterrent for any terrorist threat, especially at a base like [Devonport]".

"My dogs will work on vessels, in vehicles or do area searches, route searches and building searches," she said.
