Ukraine's Challenger 2 tanks will be staying in action despite battlefield wear and tear, thanks to a programme ensuring they can be swiftly repaired and returned to service.

Heavy fighting and constant drone attacks have made maintenance a critical challenge, with armoured vehicles needing rapid repairs to remain effective.

British support is helping meet that need, not just by fixing damaged tanks but by training Ukrainian crews to carry out their own battlefield repairs.

This initiative forms part of a 15-month contract extension awarded to Babcock International Group by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The contract will support Ukraine's military, ensuring its vehicles – especially the Challenger 2 tanks – remain operational.

It includes the vital task of training Ukrainian military personnel to carry out repairs in-country, allowing them to keep their armoured vehicles battle-ready without waiting for foreign support.

In addition, the programme will manage the supply chain and provide spare parts, ensuring a steady flow of essential resources.

David Lockwood, Babcock International Group's CEO, said: "Ensuring Ukraine's military vehicles and equipment are back in frontline action with no delay is critical."

Challenger 2 tanks, supplied by Britain, have been instrumental in Ukraine's defence, providing crucial firepower and protection for troops on the frontlines.

However, even the most advanced tanks require maintenance and repairs to stay operational.

The contract, originally initiated in July 2023, is part of a long-term commitment to ensure Ukraine's military assets remain in top condition, particularly as the full-scale invasion enters its fourth year.
