Members of the Royal Family made subtle fashion nods to the Second World War as they watched the events to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

King Charles chose not to wear medals on his uniform, emulating his grandfather, George VI, when he appeared on the Buckingham Palace balcony to celebrate VE Day in May 1945, also with his medals removed in a gesture of respect.

Princess Anne made a nod to WW2 history by wearing the uniform of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry – the Princess Royal's Volunteer Corps – similar to what the late Queen wore on VE Day 80 years ago.

The King and Queen stood alongside the Prince and Princess of Wales and their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis to watch the flypast featuring some of the RAF's most iconic aircraft.

King Charles wore the naval No.1 dress uniform for the commemoration, just like his grandfather did 80 years ago.

Queen Camilla paid tribute to her family's military history wearing a 12th Royal Lancers brooch on her blue coat to remember her late father, Major Bruce Shand, who served with the 12th Lancers during the Second World War and was awarded the Military Cross in 1940.

The Princess of Wales also wore a brooch fit to match the occasion – a Fleet Air Arm wings pin – as she watched the procession and flypast.

She later chatted with veterans at a tea party, listening to their stories, along with the Prince of Wales and their son Prince George.

Her grandfather served in the RAF as a fighter pilot during the Second World War.

Alongside her, the Prince of Wales was dressed in the RAF No.1 uniform for the occasion.

The tea party followed the flypast, featuring 23 RAF aircraft, and military procession, in which Nato allies marched alongside 1,300 members of the UK Armed Forces.

The event began at midday, with actor Timothy Spall reading an excerpt from Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill's 1945 victory speech.

VE Day anniversary events will continue throughout this week.
