Royal Navy officer cadets pass out in front of Prince Charles

Hundreds of Royal Navy officer cadets have passed out from Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC) in front of the Prince of Wales.

Prince Charles, who himself served in the Royal Navy, was present in Dartmouth as cadets commissioned into the service.

Fifty years after starting his naval career at the college, His Royal Highness said the venue has a "rather special place" in the hearts of the royal family.

"It is somewhat alarming to think that, 50 years ago, I was standing where you are," he added.

Training to be an officer in the Navy is divided into two phases, basic training and professional training, with the first phase a 30-week course.

Captain Roger Readwin, Captain of BRNC, said the Prince of Wales "understands the occasion" of the day as well as "the journey these young men and women are about to embark on".
