Royal Navy Submarine Captain Loses Command After Lockdown Party

HMS Trenchant

A Royal Navy submarine captain who allowed his crew to hold a barbecue party during the coronavirus lockdown has lost his command.

The party is understood to be among a number of reasons Commander Jonathan Lewis, captain of the nuclear-powered hunter-killer submarine HMS Trenchant, has been relieved of his command.

A Royal Navy spokesperson said: "We can confirm that the Commanding Officer of HMS Trenchant has been removed from command.

"While we are aware of the media interest in this issue, we are bound by employer confidentiality not to comment any further at this time."

Reports suggest Commander Lewis had been warned by superior officers against holding the barbecue.

A video of the party was posted to social media.

The footage, seen by Forces News, shows crew members of the vessel in violation of Government lockdown guidelines after docking for repairs at its base at Devonport, Plymouth.

It also showed several sailors hosting an impromptu DJ set.

The Royal Navy does not comment on submarine operations, but Forces News understands the nuclear-powered attack submarine had been at sea for long enough that there were no concerns anyone aboard was ill with COVID-19.

A decision was taken for the crew to remain with Trenchant while repairs were carried out to prevent any contact with the virus.

A new commanding officer for the vessel is expected to be appointed in due course.
