Russian ‘Carrier-Killer’ Sub Expected To Make Rare Public Appearance
A massive Russian submarine designed to destroy US aircraft carriers is reported to be taking part in the country’s annual naval parade for the first time.
The 24,000 tonne Project 949A boats, known as the Oscar-class by NATO, were built during the Cold War to hunt down and sink American supercarriers.
11 were built and currently eight of them have remained in service with the Russian Navy.
The K-141 Kursk was an Oscar-class submarine which was destroyed in an explosion in August 2000, with the loss of all 118 crew members.
According to Russia’s Defense Ministry, the parade in St. Petersburg will involve over 40 warships, including 18 of the navy's most advanced vessels.
