The authorities in Afghanistan have said a senior Afghan Army commander has been killed in a roadside bomb attack in the southern province of Helmand.

The head of the military's border forces, General Zahir Gul Muqbil, was leading a convoy of soldiers and local journalists when his vehicle hit a mine.

Another member of the security personnel was also killed in the attack, according to an Afghan official.

The spokesman for the provincial governor announced on Saturday that the blast also wounded a local TV reporter when it struck the passing convoy.

Qari Yusouf Ahmadi, a Taliban spokesman, claimed responsibility for the attack.
