'Forgotten Army' Of Suez Remembered

A memorial service has been held for members of the so-called 'forgotten army' that took part in the Suez Crisis of the 1950s.

Tens of thousands of British troops were sent to Egypt to join French forces after Israel attacked the country.

It later emerged that Britain and France had planned the invasion alongside Israel.

With an aim of retaking the Suez canal and removing Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser, who had nationalised the waterway, from power, the campaign was a military success but diplomatic humiliation.

It resulted in the deaths of 16 British service personnel, with almost 100 wounded.

Veterans and families gathered at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire to mark the 60th anniversary of the ceasefire.
