US President Donald Trump has shed new light on his relationship with the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, saying they "fell in love" after Mr Kim wrote him beautiful letters.

"He wrote me beautiful letters and they're great letters. We fell in love."

In a speech to supporters in West Virginia, Mr Trump said their countries had been close to war before his diplomatic engagement, and now Pyongyang had stopped its nuclear and missile tests.

President Trump and Mr Kim have said they want to work towards denuclearising the Korean peninsula and held talks at an unprecedented meeting in June in Singapore to discuss the idea.

Before the talks, the leaders regularly traded threats and insults as North Korea pushed to develop a nuclear missile capable of hitting the United States.

The Trump administration said they are preparing for a second summit with Mr Kim to talk about denuclearisation.

The time and location have not yet been announced.
