Viral Internet Challenge Raising Awareness Of Veteran Suicide

#22Kill - Mark Ormrod
British forces veterans are taking part in the new viral challenge, #22Kill.

The participants record a video stating their name and why they've accepted the challenge before doing 22 press-ups before calling out three friends to do the same.

The videos are then posted on social media using the hashtags #22pushup and #22Kill.

22 is the same as the number of United States veterans who are said to commit suicide every day.

Some people, like veteran Mark Ormrod, are performing 22 push-ups every day for 22 days.

The former Royal Marine lost three limbs in Afghanistan after stepping on an improvised explosive device on Christmas Eve 2007.

It is spreading like the Ice Bucket Challenge in 2014.

Former England defender Rio Ferdinand tweeted his challenge alongside former professional rugby player Mel Deane.

The 22Kill program director Jimmy Mac told US media they intend to reduce the veteran suicide rate among those suffering from PTSD.

The challenge began after they were offered $100,000 if 22Kill could get 1,000 videos of people doing 22 push-ups.

They accepted the challenge and received 3,000 videos in three days.

The money went to a veteran programme they supported.

This year the challenge is not for a donation but to continue to raise awareness of the issue.
