Afghanistan veterans Johnny Mercer and Tom Tugendhat are appointed in a Cabinet reshuffle by new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Mr Mercer has been appointed to his former role of Veterans Minister.

The Army veteran, who in recent weeks was a vocal critic of Liz Truss's mini-budget, was sacked as veterans' minister when the now ex-PM took over in September.

He supported Rishi Sunak in the race to replace Ms Truss and recently spoke about being sacked as a "gut punch".

On Tuesday evening, Mr Mercer tweeted: "My determination to make this the best country in the world to be an Armed Forces veteran remains unbowed.

"Delighted to return to Cabinet this evening, and looking forward to the mission supporting Rishi Sunak."

Tom Tugendhat has been re-appointed as Security Minister and will attend Cabinet, Downing Street confirmed.

He tweeted to say: "It's an honour to be reappointed Security Minister. I will continue to serve our country and defend us from the threats we face."

Meanwhile, Ben Wallace will remain as Defence Secretary.

First appointed to the role in July 2019, Mr Wallace retained his post in Liz Truss's government and is one of the few Cabinet secretaries to remain in position under Boris Johnson, Ms Truss and now Mr Sunak.
