The founder of the UK's first war memorial to Sikhs who served during the World Wars has been recognised for his voluntary work in the King's Birthday Honours List.

Captain Jagjeet Singh-Sohal VR has received an OBE for services to the commemoration of Commonwealth soldiers who served for Great Britain.

Capt Singh-Sohal, 42, has led the Sikh commemoration events for more than a decade, and serves as a trustee of the Commonwealth War Foundation and advises several other military charities.

He revealed that he was "humbled" and "elated" to have been appointed an OBE.

"It has been the honour of my life to commemorate those from across the Commonwealth who fought during the World Wars, so that their memory lives on forevermore," the Army reservist said.

"The valour of the Sikhs in particular inspired me to join the Army Reserve, to deploy on operations and fight for my country, and create the national WW1 Sikh Memorial.

"My hope is that young people from diverse socio-economic backgrounds like mine are inspired by those who serve to take a stand for the freedoms we cherish today."

The trained television journalist and filmmaker founded the WW1 Sikh Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum in 2015 to ensure that the bravery of Sikh soldiers was remembered at a place of national significance.

Capt Singh-Sohal, who was born and raised in Handsworth, Birmingham, has also further created and delivered educational programmes and events for people from diverse backgrounds about the Sikh contribution during the Frontier Wars, World Wars and continued service in modern Britain.

Overall, King Charles III has recognised 70 British Army personnel with honours and awards.

Regular and reserve soldiers have been rewarded for their exceptional vision, persistent selfless commitment and professional drive.

The men and women who have received awards have made outstanding contributions both at home and abroad.

These include the provision of specialist medical knowledge that has saved the lives of hundreds of service personnel in the line of duty, providing outstanding support to veterans, safely removing a World War Two bomb found in a garden that could have destroyed hundreds of homes, and aiding the UK's efforts to support Ukraine, saving the lives of countless Ukrainian soldiers and helping keep Ukraine in the fight well beyond expectations.

Paul Carney, the previous Army Sergeant Major, who now serves with the Corps of the Royal Engineers, has been made an OBE.

"He has demonstrably improved the lives and professional outputs of the British Army soldier," his citation said.

"His advocacy has touched everything from infrastructure to dress policy and operations.

"His influence has been evident in most soldier-facing policy over the past two years, and his contributions have always improved it."
