Russia gaining momentum as Ukrainian defenders desperately wait for more support

Watch: Forces News looks at why Moscow is gaining momentum

Russia has gained more territory in 2024 than it lost during the whole of Ukraine's much-anticipated counter-offensive last summer.

The question is what has gone wrong for Ukraine and what are the Russians doing differently?

From the deterioration of Ukraine's air defences to the sheer weight of troops and materiel Russia is bringing to bear, Forces News in the video above looks at why Moscow is gaining momentum.

In some parts of the frontline, Russia has got up to 20 times the number of soldiers as Ukraine.

According to a report by the UK think tank Rusi, Moscow now has 510,000 troops in Ukraine.

And it's continuing to recruit up to 30,000 more each month.
