Foo Fighters Perform to Honour Invictus Games Athletes

Guardsmen from Nijmegen Company Grenadier Guards and US Marines formed a Flag Party at a reception to honour the Invictus Games athletes held at Winfield House, the official residence of the United States Ambassador to London, Mr Matthew Barzun. 

Competitors and military personnel involved in supporting the Games enjoyed hot dogs, ice cream and an intimate if not sonic performance by the Foo Fighters.   

In a pre-recorded video message the US President Barack Obama wished the athletes luck and paid tribute to all service personnel thanking them for their sacrifice and determination.

"I know it's going to be a fiercely competitive few days but the truth is that everyone of you in these games, every service member and veteran, has already earned our highest admiration and our deepest gratitude.

"When your countries asked you to serve, to risk everything to protect our safety and our freedom, you and your families answered the call and just as you inspired us with your courage on the battlefield, your grit and resilience when you take the playing field - your incomparable souls - inspire us today.

“So on behalf of the American people thank you…good luck to all the athletes and ‘Go Team America!’”

Mr Barzun reminded the audience that 2014 marks 200 years since English troops burnt down the White House but described how two nations who were once fierce enemies had become fast friends and so it was fitting that the welcome reception should be held at the US Ambassador’s residence.   

In reply Prince Harry said "It gives me great pleasure to welcome all of the competitors to London for the first Invictus Games.  "Thank you, from me, for embracing the concept so enthusiastically and coming all this way  you really have no idea what you've let yourselves in for”.
