Iron Fist Prepare For Spearhead Role

20th Armoured Infantry Brigade are preparing for their Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF) role in 2017.

In a post-Afghanistan era, NATO troops are moving away from the multi-year deployment to a new force structure. One that is lighter on its feet and ready to respond robustly to a broad range of threats.

These multi-national soldiers are the first to train as a so-called ‘spearhead’ force. Officially called a Very High Readiness Joint Task Force, its aim is to build a land force around a core brigade of thousands, able to deploy in less than 72 hours.

It’s one of a number of measures signed off at the NATO summit in Wales in 2014. It is intended to make NATO fitter, faster and more flexible.

20th Armoured Infantry Brigade's commander, Brigadier Ian Mortimer, has been telling Forces TV what this means for his troops and what preparation they need for the role.
