Mesmerising Military and Civillian Air Traffic in the UK Captured

A day in the life of UK air traffic has been visualised in captivating time-lapse footage courtesy of the NATS (National Air Traffic Services).

The creation has been based on actual flight records from the 6,000 or so planes that take-off and land across the region during a 24-hour period.

The footage, which shows activity 800 times faster than real time, reveals the incredible volume and complexity of air traffic over the country.

NATS also manages air traffic control for both civilian and military aircraft in Gibraltar

Matt Nills, NATS Head of Digital Communication explained: "Our airspace is busy, complex and there is a lot going on. Each year we manage around 2.2 million movements, peaking at over 8,000 a day (although there are around 7,000 on this particular day).”

"Airspace might be the invisible infrastructure, but it is every bit as important as the airports and runways on the ground."
