Around 200 personnel are still unable to access their accommodation at Catterick Garrison after a fire last night that left one person injured, BFBS Forces News understands.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service attended Gaza Barracks, a single-living accommodation (SLA) block housing personnel from the Light Dragoons, at 19:48 on Thursday.
The evacuation follows a failure of the fire alarm system, which is no longer working as required. This means that wider accommodation blocks within the barracks are no longer health and safety compliant.
The blaze was brought under control overnight, with the last fire resources leaving the scene in the early hours of Friday morning at 02:43, the service said. On-site personnel also kept a watching brief.
One person was taken to hospital suffering with smoke inhalation.
Pictures and video shared online showed large plumes of smoke billowing from the accommodation block, visible for miles, as firefighters doused the flames from an aerial platform.
The Army spokesperson said that everyone affected by the incident is being provided with alternative accommodation and relevant welfare support.
They added that the matter is still under investigation, and they cannot comment further.
