Searching for a Solution to the Division of Cyprus 40 Years On

The Republic of Cyprus has given assurances that it is still committed to finding a solution to the island's division 40 years on.

Government Spokesman Nicos Christodoulides says that Turkey needs to see the benefit of an agreement between the two sides but admitted there is still mistrust.

The President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is 76 year old Dervis Eroglu. A former doctor, he's been Prime Minister three times and became leader in 2010.

Regarded as a hardliner, he is known to favour the idea of the TRNC becoming an independent state.

And as he told our reporter Simon Newton he believes these latest negotiations could be the last chance to unify the divided island.

First Nicos Christodoulides spoke to our reporter Carla Prater and began by explaining what the events of 1974 mean to the country today.
