Twigs, moss and mine tape: How a model helps soldiers prepare for a mission
Gurkha infanteers have been demonstrating an age-old technique in the British Army that increases the chance of success of a mission or patrol - building a model of the ground beforehand.
Soldiers use everything at their disposal, such as twigs, moss and mine tape, to create a 3D representation of the area they're operating in.
This allows them to plan a route, work out areas that offer cover – for both them and the enemy – and identify any potential obstacles or hazards. Being able to visualise what lies ahead will make them more effective in the field.
