WW1 Sikh Soldiers Memorial Campaign

A campaign has been launched to recognise the part played by Sikh soldiers who served in the British Indian Army during the First World War.

Although they made up only one per cent of the Indian Population at the time they accounted for 20 per cent of the Army which fought alongside the British in the trenches.

Kate Gerbeau spoke to filmmaker and reservist, Jay Singh-Sohal, who is leading that campaign to create a permanent memorial and asked him to describe what sort of soldiers the Sikhs were.
