Broomsticks & Bubblewrap: Blowing Up A 100 Year Old Torpedo

An estimated 40,000 wrecks of ships and submarines lie in the waters surrounding Britain.

One of the responsibilities of minesweeper vessels like HMS Blyth is to find unexploded ordnance contained within the wrecks - and to make it safe.

Often their work goes unnoticed – far out at sea where only those on board know what she gets up to.

The crew on HMS Blyth use explosives to dispose of a 100 year old torpedo which poses a risk to fishermen, divers and saliors.

To get rid of the torpedo they used unorthodox materials for the detonation device including gaffa taping explosives to two broomsticks and strapping on a roll of bubble wrap to act as a float.
