First Female Commanding Officer Takes Helm At HMS Raleigh

A new commanding officer has taken the helm at HMS Raleigh.

Captain Ellie Ablett is the first woman to take command of the Royal Navy basic training base.

It comes as the Navy is trying to increase its numbers across the fleet following last year's defence review.

Woman have been able to join the Royal Navy since 1917. In 1993 they were allowed to join the surface fleet.

Since then women have commanded Royal Navy warships and naval air squadrons but this is the first time a woman have commanded a Royal Navy training establishment.
