HMS Somerset’s Barber Raises Funds For Charity

HMS Somerset’s resident amateur, but talented, barber Able Seaman Tymoor Nabil has raised over £1,600 for charity by cutting his shipmates’ hair during the ship’s six month operational deployment.

AB Nabil, 34, from Kidwelly, South Wales, has had a continuous stream of customers most evenings whilst the Devonport based Type 23 frigate has been on patrol in and around the Gulf and Indian Ocean. ‘Camel Cuts’ charges only £5 for a short back and sides, but has raised a significant amount of money for the NSPCC and HMS Somerset’s Welfare Fund since leaving UK in January 2014.

Tymoor selected the NSPCC as his chosen charity 3 years ago and he hopes the money raised will make a difference to the lives of at risk children. The ship’s barber said:

“I have been cutting hair for most of the sailors throughout the deployment, it’s not been that easy for me but we managed to raise a nice amount of money for charity.

“At the end of a long deployment I feel proud to have raised the money because I know it will benefit my chosen charity the NCPCC.”

HMS Somerset’s Executive Officer, Lieutenant Commander Des Hirons, said:

“Able Seaman Nabil has offered a quality service as the Ship’s resident Barber and his dedication to raising funds for charity should be applauded.

“Camel Cuts has proven popular with customers ranging from the most junior sailor to the Commanding Officer.”

HMS Somerset has maintained a Royal Navy presence in the Indian Ocean and the Gulf over the last six months, the ship will return to UK this summer.

During her operational deployment as part of Operation Kipion HMS Somerset has been engaged in a wide range of Maritime Security Operations which are designed to actively deter, disrupt and suppress unlawful use of the sea in order to protect global maritime security and secure freedom of navigation for the benefit of all nations.
