Making The Best Of It: UK Sailor's Unusual Fundraising Challenge

Forces humour, like that of doctors and nurses, can be a little "out there" given the nature of the job sometimes.

Bearing this in mind, one former Royal Navy servicewoman has been using a difficult diagnosis to aid a fundraising mission.

Former Petty Officer Writer Janet Riddell had represented the Senior Service in football until a helicopter crash in Baghdad in 2007 left her in a wheelchair.

Now, Janet Riddell must have a leg amputated above the knee due to ongoing medical complications from her injury.

And she's decided to turn the news into a fundraising event for the Royal Navy Benevolent Trust.

On Janet's fundraising page people can guess the weight of her amputated leg for a £50 prize and surgeons have agreed to weigh the leg following the operation.
