The ceremony went ahead with First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir George Zambellas, who was also due to present medals alongside the Duchess.

British forces played a crucial role after the outbreak of Ebola last October.

As well as building treatment centres and training local health workers, they were also been involved in the wider effort to stamp out the disease.

More than 800 British troops were deployed on Operation Gritrock.

A number of military healthcare workers were admitted to The Royal Free Hospital in London, following potential exposure to the Ebola Virus while in Sierra Leone.

It has been established that the risk to the public from the Ebola virus remains "very low."
