Military Robots Tested Out In Scotland
A military exercise is Scotland is testing autonomous systems that fly, sail or dive to see the benefits they could bring to military personnel.
Exercise Unmanned Warrior has proved to be a glimpse into the future, with autonomous vehicles and robots doing jobs impossible for humans, or simply turning tasks that take human operators weeks into minor operations taking mere hours.
It's seen 400 participants operating in an area of 10,000 square miles, providing a chance to prove that the kit works away from the lab, can cope in the challenging Scottish environment, and how it could help military operations.
The brainchild of the former First Sea Lord Admiral Sir George Zambellas, it's brought together the Royal Navy, industry, and scientists in an unprecedented way.
There are autonomous systems on show for almost every mission you could think of - on the water, above or below it, and protecting military personnel from dull, dirty, or dangerous work.
Some of the kit at the exercise could be in service within the next year, meanwhile.
