HMS Formidable: Work begins on Royal Navy's newest warship and third Type 31

Watch: Work starts on Royal Navy's newest Type 31 frigate

Work has begun on the Royal Navy's newest warship with the first steel cut on HMS Formidable – the latest Type 31 frigate being built for the Senior Service.

Five in total will be constructed at Rosyth Dockyard in Fife and the new ship will take over the role currently being carried out by the Type 23s.

HMS Formidable is the third ship in the class with construction on HMS Venturer – which is in the outfitting stage – and HMS Active already under way at the shipyard.

The new ships will be 60% larger but require only 60% of the crew – around 120 sailors – due to technological advances and new ways of working.

HMS Formidable will carry out maritime security patrols and disaster relief support, and will also be a launchpad for Commando raids.

All five Inspiration-class ships are equipped with a 57mm main gun with programmable ammunition plus two 40mm Bofors guns, the Sea Ceptor air defence missile system and a 4D radar.

They will also have a large hold to fit equipment for specific missions – such as diving, minehunting kit, drones or disaster-relief supplies.

Workers gathered for the ceremonial cutting of the first steel at the Babcock Dockyard in Rosyth – where the construction on both the Royal Navy's aircraft carriers was completed.

Armed Forces Minister Luke Pollard – who did the honours - said: "This Government is committed to making Britain secure at home and strong abroad.

"These frigates will be at the heart of the Royal Navy fleet, deterring aggression and supporting our military.

"Today's significant milestone is backing the Government’s mission to grow the economy by supporting thousands of jobs in Scotland and across the UK."

David Lockwood, Babcock's chief executive officer, said: "Today, we are proud to mark yet another milestone in this important defence programme for the Royal Navy.

"These frigates will play a significant role in protecting the UK and supporting international partnered defence operations.

"This programme is a real demonstration of UK sovereign shipbuilding capability and is delivering positive economic impact within Scotland and in communities across the UK.

"It is a privilege for our teams across Babcock to be delivering these platforms for the nation."
