Enhancing cooperation between the five Poseidon-operating nations was the aim when RAF Lossiemouth hosted maritime forces from the USA, Canada, Germany and Norway for the first JEDI (Joint Exploration and Discussion of Initiatives) symposium of 2025.

The JEDI gathering focused on aligning priorities, sharing information, and refining procedures to ensure the 40-plus Poseidon aircraft in Europe can act as a unified fleet.

International crews conducted simulated anti-submarine missions throughout the week to bolster interoperability, leveraging common aircraft systems and weapons.

"Despite some differences in procedures at a tactical level, the crews were able to operate effectively thanks to common aircraft, mission systems, and weapons," said a Poseidon instructor at RAF Lossiemouth.

The Poseidon aircraft plays a vital role in maritime surveillance, routinely monitoring waters around the UK for surface and subsurface threats and is also deployed for search-and-rescue missions.

Earlier this month, a Poseidon from RAF Lossiemouth was involved in tracking the Russian landing ship RFN Aleksandr Shabalin through the English Channel.

Squadron Leader Andy Barber, Executive Officer of 120 Squadron, emphasised the importance of international cooperation.

"Maritime patrol is a team game, requiring close cooperation with allies and Nato partners to ensure a coherent response to any threats we may face," he said.

"This is why the JEDI Symposium is such an important event, allowing operators from the five nations to exchange ideas and build bonds, both professionally and socially.

"RAF Lossiemouth is the ideal location, due to its strategic position on the northern approaches to the UK, and close to the entrance to the Baltic Sea."

RAF Lossiemouth, home to nine Poseidon aircraft, regularly hosts allied nations for exercises in the North Sea and training missions.

In 2024, a US naval support facility was opened at the base, providing a permanent hub for American forces.

The Trinity House Agreement, signed last October, also paved the way for Germany to begin operating its Poseidon fleet out of Lossiemouth, further cementing its status as a key Nato hub.
