Royal Navy Firefighters Stress Test High Tech Hoses

It's not just a case of building a new ship when it comes the Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers.

Ensuring the Royal Navy's new pride and joy can operate safely at sea is a priority and that includes preparing for fighting fires.

A fire at sea could be catastrophic which is why every Royal Navy recruit learns the basics of fire fighting at HMS Raleigh.

Until now the surface fleet has been using general fire fighting nozzles and hoses – which spray 60,000 tonnes of water an hour.

However, with the new Queen Elizabeth-class carriers on the horizon, brand new equipment has been designed to have the same effect, with less water.

Submarines have different equipment again. Using a third of the water the general service kit does.

Eventually the new equipment specific to the carriers will be filtered down through the rest of the surface fleet.
