Royal Navy Marks the Moment the First Shot of WWI was Fired

A Royal Navy ship has marked the moment the first shot of the First World War was fired.
HMS Mersey performed a sail-by at the Cowes Week regatta, heralding in a minute's silence observed by the yachtsmen and women competing there.

100 years ago today another ship HMS Lance opened fire on a German ship in the North Sea, just hours after war had been declared.
