Originally from Swindon, Laura first joined the Queen Alexandra’s Royal Naval Nursing Service in 2011 as a newly-qualified registered nurse.

She had recently deployed to Sierra Leone as part of a mentoring group to develop local nursing care in the country.

Friends on Facebook shared their grief.

Kimberley Jane Arthur said:
“Honestly can't believe it, you were such a friendly person, had a heart of gold, so glad I got to know you, gone but never forgotten Laura Hyde Xx”
Stephanie Taylor added:
“RIP Laura Hyde, you will be sadly missed. Sleep tight”
The Defence Medical Group (South West) told the Plymouth Herald:

"Leading Naval Nurse Laura Hyde joined the Queen Alexandra's Royal Naval Nursing Service in the autumn of 2011 as a newly-qualified registered nurse.

"Following initial Naval training at HMS Raleigh she was assigned to wards in Plymouth NHS Trust at Derriford Hospital to develop her nursing skills before she later moved to the emergency department.
"She excelled in this department and she decided her own career choice to specialise in this demanding area of nursing.”
"After completing specialist training in 2015, she became an integral member of the emergency department in Derriford Hospital as part of Defence Medical Group (South West), where she maintained her skills for deployed military operations - most recently to Sierra Leone as part of a mentoring group to develop local nursing care.”

An inquest into her death has been opened and adjourned.
