Southsea Pays Tribute to D-Day

The Naval city of Portsmouth was the focus of events on the English side of the channel as the eve of D-Day is marked.

Southsea seafront paid tribute to the men who launched from there on Operation Overlord, many of them never to return, as well as the civilians who helped their effort. The Princess Royal was the guest of honour, as Commodore in Chief of the Royal Navy in the area.

A Royal Marines Band led the ceremony after performing for Royalty only hours before.
