Triple Olympic Rowing Champion Will Need Hip Surgery

Triple Olympic rowing champion and Royal Navy sailor Pete Reed faces several weeks out of the sport because he needs hip surgery.

Lieutenant Reed has already had one key-hole procedure on his left hip, and will also have surgery on his right hip.

Just days after announcing his quest for a fourth Olympic rowing title at Tokyo 2020,  Pete who received an OBE in the New Year's honours list after getting his third Olympic gold in Rio, had an MRI scan.

It revealed he needs surgery on both hips. The Royal Navy lieutenant says he can't row or even put his shoes on without the surgery.

He had an Arthroscopy, which is a nonevasive procedure on his left hip on Monday and is now recovering at home.

After rehab on the left side, he'll have an operation on his right hip soon, before the process of recovery and rehab begins.

It can take up to a fortnight for patients to be able to walk with crutches and three to six months before they're totally pain-free.

Reed is determined to be back in harness as soon as possible. His immediate aim is to be fit to trial for team GB for the World Championships in Florida in September.
