Understated Wheel Will Steer HMS Queen Elizabeth
With HMS Queen Elizabeth edging ever-closer to being an operational warship, some of the finer details are also being revealed.
The Royal Navy has taken a photo of the new wheel for the future flagship, HMS Queen Elizabeth, a 65,000 ton displacement aircraft carrier, and you'd be forgiven for raising an eyebrow at it's understated appearance.
A far-cry from the majestic wooden or brass wheels that controlled the rudder movements from a by-gone era, the new wheel flaunts a minimalist design.
More From Forces TV: Building HMS Queen Elizabeth
- The new Queen Elizabeth fog horn can be heard over 2 miles away, and will be louder than a rock concert at 146 decibels.
- Over 470 London buses can park on the flight deck.
- The Queen Elizabeth is more than three times the size of HMS Illustrious.
- The on-board water treatment plant can produce over 500 tonnes of fresh water every day.
- The Queen Elizabeth was built in sections across the UK & shipped to Rosyth in Scotland.
- It's range is 10,000 nautical miles!
The bridge for the Littoral Combat Ship seems akin to something from "Star Trek," with vast arrays of glass overlooking a central control post where the officer of the deck can operate the ship with a multifunction joystick.
